Decorated samian

These sherds of decorated samian pottery were collected in Exeter by Captain Shortt in the mid 19th century. Over a thirty year period he collected Samian pottery and coins which were uncovered during building works in the city, and published his findings in local newspapers. Shortt left Exeter before the museum was established and much of his collection was sold into private ownership. His collection of samian was given to the museum many years later. These sherds are part of that important collection.
