Jar

This clay vessel is a model based upon the more larger vessels (chomo) that were used to store and ferment a ceremonial beverage made from manioc called masato.

These vessels were often partially buried in the ground to keep the masato cool during the fermentation process. They were traditionally made by women, the designs are based on motifs found in nature.

Model ceramics were sold as early souvenirs.

Collected by Captain Andrew Elliot in the 1930s and donated to RAMM by the family in 2003. According to family correspondence “Captain Elliott made regular voyages on the SS Hilary, a cargo passenger ship of the Booth Line, Liverpool, sailing one thousand miles up the Amazon as far as Manaus”
