‘Roadside Scene in Rome (the Ancient Wall between Porta Salaria and Porta Pinciana)’ by Francis Towne (1739-1816) c. 1800. This landscape depicts in oil a walled garden with two figures and cattle entering it from the road, via a central gate. St Peter’s Dome is visible in the background. Towne was a British watercolourist of landscapes, who depicted the English countryside and Italian scenes.
