Winter I

Jane Beeson lived for most of her later life at Manaton on Dartmoor. She said of this work: ‘The idea for this painting comes from the moor under snow. To me the moor looks at its best under snow when it is made up of burnt sienna, burnt umber, black, ochre, white and grey. The bars I use often in this and other paintings of the same period, the early 1960s, come from the bars this old house has on its windows and tops of buildings’ doors; also the crenulations on the wall of an ancient piggery.’
