Clay cooler

George Fishley established a pottery at Fremington, North Devon in 1811, which was productive for three generations. The output from the Fishley pottery was varied, ranging from plain ware such this container to highly decorated items. This butter cooler was made by Fishley’s grandson, Edwin Beer Fishley and would have kept the contents cool through evaporation from the porous earthenware clay. It bears an inscription THE KOOLIT on the side.
