Amulet

Leather amulets, like this example, were produced by Islamic communities in West Africa. This Mandinka example was acquired in Sierra Leone.

The small leather pouches contain hand-written verses (ayat) on paper from the Qu’ran. The prayers are believed to offer protection to the wearer of the amulet.

Donated in 1999.
