Shin guard
A warrior needed armour if he was to survive in battle. The lower legs would have been protected by a pair of greaves (suneate) that were tied onto them using a pair of cords, one at the ankle and one under the knee. This is an example of a splintered shin guard (shino suneate) and includes small sections of mail which were used to span any spaces between the shino.
