Exeter as seen from the Canal Basin

The Canal, first constructed in the 1560s, was enlarged over the centuries. By the 1830s the Basin was at its most developed, when large warehouses were built along the quayside. In the centre, to the left of the Cathedral, are the buildings of Colleton Crescent, built between 1802 and 1814. To the left of the Cathedral is St Michael’s church, completed in 1867 and on the far right, the new St Leonard’s Church, completed two years before this watercolour.
