Whip
The lace bark whip is associated with the history of slavery in the Caribbean. This was very likely made as a souvenir.
Lagetta lagetto, or lace bark/ gauze tree, is native to several Caribbean islands, including Jamaica. The material is referred to in 17th century writings about Jamaica and the West Indies. The use of this material by the indigenous population was not recorded.
Length = 1750mm
This was originally donated to the North Somerset Museum Service, Woodspring Museum, Weston-super-Mare in 1958 by Miss Lancaster (WSM 58/0142). Woodspring Museum then transferred its ethnographic collection to RAMM in 1974. We have no information about how the donor had acquired this item.
