Jug

An unsigned jug with strong similarities to the work of the Fishley family of Fremington, North Devon. The decoration has been scratched into a top layer of slip (thin clay) and larger areas of slip have been neatly removed to leave the dark brown surface of the underlying clay exposed. The decoration reflects the life if the countryside: flowers,a butterfly and a bird. A clear glaze over the top makes the otherwise porous earthenware jug impermeable.
