Faja

The collectors were told that this woman’s sash was woven in the hills near Pátzcuaro by Tarascan women (now more commonly termed Purépecha). It was woven on the backstrap loom, with blue and black wool, and displays blue horizontal bands across its width. The warp has not been severed. This sash therefore incorporates a length of warp that is 230 mm – when severed, these warp yarns would be knotted or braided to serve as the end-fringe.

Purchased by the donors in February 1967
