Skirt

A flax skirt or piupiu. This was developed from an older garment and has been made popular by cultural performance groups. Thay are labour intensive, taking up to 8 weeks to complete sue to the many stages of manufacture. Piupiu also means to wave about or oscillate, and it creates a swishing sound when moved, especially in a large group. When being worn for Ngati Ranana, the wearers are not allowed to eat, drink or go to the toilet in order to preserve its tapu state.
