Dinner suit tail coat
The tail or dress coat as it is more properly known was, during the nineteenth century, an essential in any gentleman’s wardrobe. It was worn for all dress or formal occasions during either day or evening. From the 1860s it was confined to evening dress and then to only the most formal functions.
