Lake Scene 1812

‘Lake Scene’, by Philip Hutchins Rogers, c.1812. This oil on canvas depicts a landscape of a lake, seen in the centre, with a boat with two white sails and two sailors; a building is seen at the lakeside centre left and in the further distance a cluster of buildings. What seems to be a church is on a hill above the scene. In the right foreground a stag and three deer are grouped. In the left foreground under the shadows three male figures are seated on a log. They are watching the scene. A fourth figure is seen in the right distance walking away from the lakeside and carrying a fishing net. The painting itself is set within a small frame in gold with reel beading.

Hutchins Rogers was an English marine and landscape painter. Pictures by him are in the Munich Gallery, the Karlsnike Gallery and in the Strasbourg Museum. There does not appear to be a specimen of Rogers work in any Gallery in Great Britain.
