Honiton (East Devon) lace collar

Some of the most famous lace-makers in Otterton were the five unmarried Pile sisters who lived on the green. Mary, Eliza, Blanche, Harriet and Elizabeth Pile were the daughters of a bootmaker. All worked in the lace trade in the 1850s, at a time when East Devon lace was in great demand.

One of the sisters made this Honiton lace collar in about 1850. It includes bullocks heart motifs and leadworks.
