Bowl

(1895-1985) Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie studied at the Central School of Art and studied pottery under Dora Billington. Katherine went to the Leach Pottery at St Ives from 1924-25 and had the opportunity there to learn from visiting Japanese potter Soetsu Matsubayashi. She put this learning into practice at her home pottery at Coleshill in Berkshire experimenting with ash glazes.
According to studio potter Richard Batterham, she is one of the four pioneer studio potters of the 1920s along with Michael Cardew, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. Her nickname among the potters was ‘Beano’.
This bowl is one of a collection of nearly fifty pieces which were donated to RAMM by the Contemporary Arts Society in 1942 and 1943. Ernest Marsh, a founder member of the Society in 1910, had been purchasing studio potters’ work throughout 1920s and 1930s. In 1943 the Society made donations to numerous museums such as RAMM. Many of RAMM’s significant pieces of studio ceramics come from this wartime donation.
