This watercolour on paper depicts Broadgate, which can be seen on the right; underneath its arch passes a coach with three attendants and two horses and before them six rows of Javelin men with, at their head, a man wearing a red frock coat and black hat. Groups of people watch from the buildings beside the gate and line the street in the foreground.

Captain John Cooke born in Ashburton, Devon 1765-1840 was Captain of Exeter Javelin Men, a saddler and author. During his career he served to the bodyguard of over thirty county Sheriffs.
