Vase

Sam Haile and his wife Marianne de Trey were invited to run the pottery at Dartington in Devon after Bernard Leach returned to St Ives in 1941. They moved to Devon to take over in 1947. They were both Royal College of Art trained, Marianne in textiles and Sam in Fine Art initially. Sam’s Tutor was William Staite Murray, a ceramicist who aimed to lift status of ceramics to that of Fine Art. Abstract expressionism and surrealism were influences on Haile and you can see an abstract expressionist use of surface pattern here.
Haile died in a road accident in 1948 and his wife took over responsibility for the Dartington Pottery.
This pot is one of a collection of nearly fifty pieces which were donated to RAMM by the Contemporary Arts Society in 1942 and 1943. Ernest Marsh, a founder member of the Society in 1910, had been purchasing studio potters’ work throughout 1920s and 1930s. In 1943 the Society made donations to numerous museums such as RAMM. Many of RAMM’s significant pieces of studio ceramics come from this wartime donation.
