Volunteer long service medal

This medal was awarded to George Roberts Shorto for his long volunteer military service. Having been discharged from the regular army he joined the 1st VBDR as a Private on 29th August 1865 and rose through the ranks until his promotion to Honorary Major in January 1893. He retired from the volunteers in August 1899. George Shorto was in military service for 44 years and was reputed to be an excellent shot. He was an active individual in the city of Exeter, being the city’s Town Clerk and a governor of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.
