Aloe fibre lace sample

This small dress accessory is made completely from a natural plant fibre. It is a lace cuff made from aloe fibre. This single cuff was collected by Frances Bury Palliser, author of A History of Lace, as an example of the use of aloe fibre in Italy and Spain. Bury Palliser describes seeing other examples being made by people in Albissola, near Genoa in Italy. These articles were similar to aloe fibre products from Barcelona in Spain. Mrs Bury Palliser remarks in her book that the lace ‘would not stand washing’.
