Lille lace sample
Frances Bury Palliser, author of A History of Lace (1864), collected many examples of Continental laces and donated them to the museum in 1869. This Lille lace sample was described as ‘modern’ bobbin lace by Mrs Bury Palliser in her inventory. Traditionally Lille lace is characterised by a fine ground with a thick thread marking the pattern. In 1851 there were 1600 workers producing lace in this part of France.
