Valenciennes lace sample

Frances Bury Palliser collected this sample of fine bobbin lace whilst travelling on the Continent. It was made in the early 18th century. Bury Palliser’s inventory describes this sample as a Valenciennes bobbin lace with picot edge, although the design and stitches are usually labelled Old Flemish. The shaped and finished sides indicate that this piece was cut from a lappet. Usually two lappets or streamers completed the dress caps worn by women during the first half of the eighteenth century.
