Tonder lace sample

This is a sample of Tønder lace from Denmark. Mrs Frances Bury Palliser donated a large collection of lace samples to the museum in 1869. Travelling around Europe, she amassed examples of many different techniques and designs. In Denmark, bobbin lace was made only in North Schleswig (South Jutland). By 1840 there were only six lace manufacturers left in the area. Mrs Palliser has given this sample an early date, labelling it 16th to 17th century, yet it shares characteristics with edging laces of the early 19th century.
