Vadstena (Sweden) lace sample
This is one of a large collection of lace samples assembled by Frances Bury Palliser for study. The collection was donated to the museum in 1869. This piece of lace was made in Vadstena, Sweden. In her book, A History of Lace, Mrs Palliser says that Vadstena lace changed in style to to keep up with current fashion. The lace was mainly used to trim national dress. Specimens of Vadstena lace, from the only lace manufactory still in existence there in Mrs Palliser’s time, were sent to the Great Exhibition in 1862. A coarse bobbin lace was still made for use at home by men and women. In Sweden it is referred to as knyppland spets or Vadstenaspets.
