Rhinoceros

A fossilised rhinoceros jaw and teeth collected from Levaton Cave, Buckfastleigh in Devon. it was donated by W.A. Cheesman. This fossil is likely to date to the Pleistocene (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). The tooth probably belonged to a wooly rhino, Coelodonta antiquitatis; a species common in Europe throughout the last ice age. Britain was connected to mainland Europe at times of low sea level during recent glaciations, this allowed large fauna (rhinos, hyenas, bears, lions, etc.) to wander onto the peninsula, only to be cut off on an island when the sea level rose.
