Cave hyena
A large fragment of a cave hyena jaw with in-situ teeth found in Smerdon’s Passage of Kents Cavern and donated by the British Association for Advancement of Science committee. The presence of teeth in this fossil allow reliable diet analyses to be conducted to help find out what this hyena was preying on. Bones of other animals from the caves also show tooth marks made by the hyenas gnawing them. The hyena was probably using the cave as a den in which to live. Pengelly number: 3518b, Locality: Smerdon’s Passage, Series: 31, Parallel: 9, Level: 2, Yard: 1L,Deposit: Cave earth, date 28/10/1870.
