Magic Lantern Slide: In the Dark Room (Artificial light photograph)

This image is probably of William Weaver Baker himself. It is a black and white image which was printed onto a red-tinted lantern plate to give the red effect. The handwritten label on the slide states the location is a photographic dark room. Weaver Baker has also specified it is an ‘artificial light photograph’, suggesting he was experimenting with different light settings. Other slides he created appear to show he had an interest in taking photographs of interesting lighting situations. This is a very unusual historic image recording part of the photographic process.
