Magic Lantern Slide: Beverley Misericord - Hanging the Fox

This photographic slide by William Weaver Baker shows a misericord in Beverley Minster which depicts a fox being hung by six geese. The geese are shown holding the rope in their beaks. In other misericords at Beverly Minster the fox is depicted as a Dominican Friar with geese representing the congregation. The misericords at Beverley Minster are believed to have been carved by the Ripon School of Carvers in 1520. Misericords are generally found on the underside of choir stalls, providing a shelf to lean on when standing during long services.
