Magic Lantern Slide: Beverley Misericord - The Fox Preaching

This photographic slide by William Weaver Baker shows a misericord at Beverley Minister, with a fox preaching to a congregation of geese. To the left of the fox is an ape, representing a clerk, with a goose on a pole behind him. The fox is related to the fables of Reynard the Fox and represents a Dominican Friar, as shown by his holding a rosary. On either side of the misericord, the supports show an owl on the left and a man showing a goose on the right. The misericords at Beverley Minster are believed to have been carved by the Ripon School of Carvers in 1520.
