John Gendall of Exeter, 1789-1865

‘John Gendall of Exeter’ (1789-1865) by John Prescott Knight, about 1840. This oil on canvas depicts a head and shoulders portrait of John Gendall seated right to left, although his gaze addresses the viewer. He wears a dark coat over a red waistcoat and high white collar. His hands are clasped over the arm of the chair left. John Gendall was himself a British artist known for is Devon landscape paintings.

Prescott Knight (1803-1881) was an English portrait painter who was closely associated with the Royal Academy.
