Vase

Thus small earthenware pot was made in 1882. It bears this date and an inscription ‘FMU Exeter’ under the base. It has been decorated using the sgraffito method, where a layer of slip (thin clay) on the surface has been scratched through to reveal the colour of the clay below. The design shows the influence of islamic design in the way the neck has been decorated while the floral pattern links to English Arts and Crafts pottery.
