Whiddon Down Hoard coin, as of Hadrian

The Romans personified their newly conquered territory of Britain as a powerful female figure, Britannia. She first appeared on coins during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in AD119 (1,900 years ago). Britannia is still used on modern British coins. This worn and corroded coin from the Whiddon Down hoard is one of those first Roman coins to depict Britannia. It is a rare find today.
