Slip top spoon

This silver spoon is a rarity as it an archaeological find but is possible to identify its likely original owner. It is stamped with the makers mark TP in a shield, and engraved with the initials ‘B W I’. At the time it was made it was the convention to place the initial letter of the surname above the man and woman’s initial letters. The date of the spoon, the initials and its find spot suggest it originally belonged to William and Joan Boggan, who lived in Gatcombe House, Littlehempston until 1676.
