Rustic Landscape with Sheep

‘Rustic Landscape with Sheep’, 1828, by John Linnell (1792-1882). This oil on canvas by Linnell depicts a group of sheep sat under the shade of a large tree, left. In the distance five cattle, farm buildings and a church steeple. Through the centre diagonal from the right, a small brook is seen crossed by two stepping stones.

Linnell was an English artist and engraver. He was a contemporary rival to John Constable and took inspiration from Northern European art of the Renaissance.
