Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine number 1
Charles Babbage donated several pieces of his Difference Engine number 1 to the museum during a visit to Exeter in 1869. These pieces are from his first attempt to design a mechanical calculator. Babbage is now regarded as one of the key people in the development of computers.
