Self-portrait
Solomon Alexander Hart was first Jew to be elected to the Royal Academy. He was also their Librarian. As a boy Hart was not allowed to attend Plymouth grammar school because of his faith, so he was schooled in Exeter.
Hart’s father wanted him to become an engraver but could not afford the premium. One engraver did offer him a position without this fee but on the condition that he served for 7 years and worked 12 hour days; Hart declined.
