Dawlish Warren, Devon

At a time when people believed in the beneficial qualities of the seaside and when Britain was going to war with France, the English coast became more popular than abroad. In 1836, the year this watercolour was painted, Brunel surveyed a route across south Devon. He preferred to tunnel through the cliffs to avoid the sea wall. In 1846 the first passenger train ran.
