Tenterhook

These tenterhooks from Exeter were L-shaped staples placed at regular intervals on a rectangular wooden tenter frame. When cloth emerged from the fulling process it was stretched on these hooks, preventing it from shrinking - hence the phrase 'being on tenterhooks'.
