Oil lamp depicting a man
This lamp was described by its collector as ‘Pinkish clay, unglazed: no handle: 3.4 in. by 2.9 in. Incuse volutes over nozzle: two volutes and two butterfly-like ornaments round the discus. Relief: Bearded man wearing pointed cap?, standing, with right arm extended: left arm on stomach: chalmys over left arm. Before him, uncertain object, possibly an altar with high flames. On bottom incised character. The shape and ornaments round the discus are similar to B.M.C. 751, which has [characters see paper record] on the bottom and was obtained in Egypt. This should be from the same factory. 3rd. Cent. A.C. (sic)’. It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death.
