Cruciform ornament

This small cross was probably attached to a suspension chain for a Christian lamp or censer. Very similar objects are known from 6th-8th century Eastern Mediterranean sites. It formerly belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects. He believed it to be a Roman object which had been found in England. As a Byzantine object it is uncertain if it was truly found in England or if this was a later accidental loss or hoax.
