Oil lamp

This lamp was described by its collector as ‘Roman, of early first century after Christ. Red. Rounded nozzle between volute, pierced handle. On bottom MMARISAR (?) which may perhaps be divided M MARI SAR, for Marcus Marius Saranus (though no such lamp maker’s name is published.) (Stevens’, 1926.)’. It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death.
