Ringstone
A Sassanian ringstone measuring approximately 1cm x 1cm, made of cornelian and dating from the 4th-5th century AD. The engraving depicts a winged horse complete with harness, surrounded by dots.
Winged horses were a popular motif in Sassanian art and some referred to a a legendary horse that brought sacred fire to the temple of Takht-i Sulaiman, in what is now Azerbaijan.
The artefact belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death.
