Plaque depicting Bacchus
Ceramic plaques were often built into the outside of Roman buildings. This scene shows the god Bacchus surrounded by women, children and mythical creatures. They are drinking and pouring wine. Hidden among them are a panther, dog, snail and hedgehog.
It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death.
