This object was described by its collector as ‘Roman? Portion of tusk or large bone carved in relief with woman holding tympanum in left hand, looking over her shoulder. Length 3.5in’. It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Montague who collected over 800 classical archaeological objects, which he bequeathed to the museum on his death. It is thought to be a decorative fragment from an expensive casket or similar item of household furniture.
