The South Gate, Exeter

Prior to its demolition in 1819 Exeter’s South Gate was one of the grandest medieval town gates standing in southern England. This watercolour is especially valuable in showing the suburbs outside the gate, rebuilt from about 1657 following the ravages of the Civil War. The two houses on the right were both demolished soon after the drawing was made.
