Mosaic from the bath-house

This fragment of floor mosaic (shown middle right in the photograph) was found in the demolition rubble from the caldarium, or hot room, of the Roman military bath-house in Exeter. The room was heated by an underfloor hypocaust system so this stone floor would have been a very hot surface. This bath-house was one of the earliest stone-built buildings in England. It was built in a Mediterranean style using materials and techniques never before seen in this country. The army systematically demolished the building when they abandoned the fortress to establish their new base in Caerleon, Wales.
