Wife of the Artist

For Collins, the Anima was the embodiment of the compassionate female spirit whilst the Angel acted in the traditional role as a messenger able to travel between the earthly and the spiritual world. Of particular concern were primordial forces and elements such as light and dark, cosmic worlds, and the struggle between good and evil. Here the presence of an angel within an otherwise familiar homely scene immediately links the ordinary to the visionary. Although entitled The Wife of the Artist the composition includes a self-portrait set against the rear wall.

Bequeathed by Mrs Elisabeth Collins as through the National Art Collections Fund
