Stumpwork embroidery

The figures represented in this silk embroidered panel are Faith, Hope and Charity. It was made during the Commonwealth period in England. The maker’s initials EMH may be seen in the top left hand corner, worked in metal wire like the date 1651. There are elements of raised work in the textured threads and decorations used, such as the hillocks and grass in chenille thread,silk wrapped coiled metal purl, and peacocks feathers. Tent stitch and straight stitches have been used on some of the flat areas. Lace stitches are used to created some of the clothing on the figures, and metal wire for their jewellery. Mica has been anchored to the windows of the little pavilion and larger building.
