St Nicholas Priory Kitchen

E. W. Edgecombe felt marker pen drawing of the ‘St Nicholas Priory Kitchen’ c.1981.

St Nicholas Priory is the oldest building in Exeter and was originally used by a community of Benedictine monks from 1087. Part of the monastery was pulled down during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries during the sixteenth century. The building was then absorbed into a mansion house.

The painting depicts the Norman cellar, which was used for storing provisions and as a kitchen. The room has a vaulted ceiling, paved floor and architectural detailing around the columns.
