Duncannon, on the River Dart, below Totnes
‘Duncannon, on the River Dart, below Totnes’, by John Wallace Tucker, c.1866. Tucker’s Devon landscape in oils depicts, on the left, a cottage with a ladder leaning against the wall and two chimneys smoking. A female figure is visible through the doorway at the top of the stairs. The cottage is located on a river bank where a rowing boat has just landed. A figure wearing a red jacket, blue trousers and a hat stands in the boat and is addressed by a woman in a red cloak and blue bonnet and who holds a basket. A third figure in blue shirt and red breeches with a red handkerchief is bending over the nets. There is a sailing boat with red sails on the river and three smaller vessels are seen in the distance. The river bank and landscape are seen on the right and into the distance.
